What to expect from your first appointment to your treatment plan
We aim to make the process of seeking psychiatric help as straightforward and comfortable as possible. Here is what you can expect at each stage.
Contact us by phone, email or through our online form. Our team will discuss your needs, confirm availability and arrange an appointment at a convenient clinic or online. We will also advise on fees and insurance.
Your first appointment typically lasts 60–90 minutes. Dr Sivasanker will conduct a comprehensive psychiatric assessment — taking a detailed history of your symptoms, your personal background, your medical history and any previous treatment. This is a collaborative process; you are encouraged to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
At the end of your assessment, Dr Sivasanker will share his clinical formulation with you — explaining his understanding of your difficulties and providing a diagnosis where appropriate. He will take time to answer any questions and discuss what the diagnosis means for you.
Dr Sivasanker will propose a personalised treatment plan — which might include medication, referral for psychological therapy, specialist treatments (such as ketamine, TMS or ECT), or a combination. The plan is developed collaboratively, taking account of your preferences and circumstances.
Treatment is reviewed at regular follow-up appointments. Dr Sivasanker will monitor your progress, adjust the treatment plan as needed and provide ongoing support throughout your care. The goal is your recovery — and we are with you every step of the way.
Yes. You are welcome to bring a trusted friend, partner or family member for support. Dr Sivasanker may ask to speak with you alone for part of the consultation, and will ask your permission before including others in any part of the assessment. It is always your choice.
Following your assessment, Dr Sivasanker will write a detailed clinical letter summarising his findings, diagnosis and treatment plan. This can be shared with your GP (with your consent) and is a useful record for your own reference. A follow-up appointment will be arranged to review your progress.
That is absolutely fine. An initial assessment provides clarity about your diagnosis and options — you are under no obligation to commence any treatment before you feel ready. Dr Sivasanker will always respect your autonomy and work at a pace that feels right for you.
